These subsequent mapping prototypes were explored through small mapping exercises, using singular images of places distorted through warping, blurring, colour adjustment and pixelating, placing the viewer at the centre with a singular focus. The objective of these mapping exercises was to further explore a sense of place and delve deeper into the notion of familiar versus unfamiliar and how that affects one’s attachment to place. These distortion mapping exercises use the manipulative tools of Adobe Photoshop to warp images, creating unfamiliar perspectives for the viewer. While the image is still recognisable, the image distortion generates unease for the viewer, as one toggles between the real and imagined, familiar and unfamiliar.
