Blurred abstraction
I continued the theme of distortion and manipulation as a means to tease out what it is about the images in the data set that create a sense of place. The next distortion mapping exercise investigated the use of colour, form and structure, while manipulating the sharpness, clarity and detail of the image data, to see what effect it would have on the ability to connect with, understand and relate to place. Once again I turned to Photoshop, to see what would happen if the images of place were distorted so much so, that they were barely recognisable, only relying only on colour, form and structure to suggest a sense of place. I blurred the images just enough to lose the detail, so only colour, light and shapes were visible. While these mapping exercises started to evoke a, through light and colour, the abstraction and lack of detail began to create a disconnect with place due to its lack of focus and familiarity.
